Where to grab a stein for Oktoberfest in southwest Connecticut

As fall…uh, falls, over southwestern Connecticut, the undeniable air of Oktoberfest and harvest celebrations have started rolling into the region.

And lucky for us, many of these events start in September.

Oktoberfest traditionally begins the third week of September and run until the first week of October, according to Ofest.com.

The yearly celebration of all things German-style beer and food began in 1810, with the wedding of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on Oct. 12. The event was marked with a city-wide celebration and horse races, which continued the next year and brought rise to annual celebrations.

Though, of course, the horse races went out of style.

The annual celebration turned to agriculture shows for amusement, according to the city website for Munich, Germany. As the festival added more carnival-themed attractions, a need to quench patron’s thirst grew. Small beer stands turned to beer tents, and eventually beer halls.

Now, Oktoberfest is known as the largest festival in the world. The event is attended by over 6 million people every year in Munich, according to the city. Munich will celebrate the 183rd Oktoberfest from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3.
