Hundreds without power in Norwalk, New Canaan line service suspended

A brief but powerful storm caused problems for commuters and others late Wednesday afternoon.

A few people were injured at Compo Beach when a tent erected for a coming festival came down in high winds.

“The storm came through and a tent came down,” Westport police Lt. Eric Woods said. “It hurt some people, minor injuries.”

Several streets around the Norwalk are closed after trees and limbs brought down wires.

Norwalk police said Scribner Avenue is closed in the area of No. 43 because of trees and wires. West Cedar Street is closed between Norwalk Community College and Boulder Road because of wires, police said. And Redcoat Road is also closed in the area of No. 24.

The storm, which moved through the area with lightning, thunder, high winds and a downpour about 5 p.m., appears to have hit Norwalk particularly hard. It is the only municipality in Fairfield County with a substantial number of outages, according to Eversource’s website. At 6:25 p.m., there were 761 customers without power in the city. By 7:20 p.m., that number was down to 404.

The storm was also intense in north Stamford. More than 90 Eversource customers in that city were without service at 7:20 p.m.

Train service was suspended on Metro-North’s New Canaan line because of downed trees near Talmadge Hill, the railroad said in an alert about 6:30 p.m.

“Customer are advised to seek alternate means of transportation,” the alerts states.
